Careful renovation of the Cephalus complex

The Riksdag is currently renovating its buildings on Helgeandsholmen and in the Old Town of Stockholm. The preparations for the renovation of the Cephalus complex in the Old Town of Stockholm, preliminarily scheduled to start in spring 2025, will continue during 2024.

The Cephalus complex is situated between Myntgatan, Salviigränd, Västerlånggatan and Storkyrkobrinken. Today, the premises are used by members of the Riksdag and officials from the Riksdag Administration.

The complex has not undergone any major reconstruction work since the 1950s. The need to modernise, among other things, the ventilation system and interior surfaces is therefore great. The renovations should result in more efficient use of the premises, as well as greater security and accessibility, in order to improve support to the work of the Riksdag and members of the Riksdag.

Construction of the Cephalus administrative building – originally known as the Chancellery annex – started in the 1940s. It is characterised by its circular courtyard.

Stockholm City Museum is responsible for identifying buildings in Stockholm City that are culturally and historically valuable. The Cephalus complex has a blue marking, which means that it is considered to have exceptionally high cultural and historical value. The renovation project involves both managing and preserving Cephalus for the future. The complex consists of everything from medieval cellar vaults to offices from the 1940s. The objective is to highlight the environments with high cultural and historical value in a way that makes it possible to continue to see the different ages in the history of the Cephalus complex. The quality of the changes should be such that they form part of the cultural and historical value of the buildings in the future.

Once the renovations are complete, members of the Riksdag and parts of the Riksdag Administration will once again have their offices in Cephalus. Like today, the ground floor towards Västerlånggatan and Storkyrkobrinken will be used for shops.

Planned start of construction in 2025

  • 2022-2023 The various activities that are housed in the complex have moved out and the premises have been emptied.
  • 2024 Planning and establishment, for example, portable cabins will be established along Kanslikajen and hoarding will be erected around the complex.
  • 2025 The renovations will start in the spring of 2025.

In June 2024, pontoons were placed at Kanslikajen. The pontoons were transported by boat from Loudden and will carry the portable cabins that will be used during the renovations. The cabins will be in place in August 2024.
