The War Delegation

The purpose of the War Delegation is to replace the Riksdag if Sweden is at war or risk of war.

I there is a risk of war, the members of the Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs together with the Prime Minister will take a decision stating that the War Delegation shall replace the Riksdag. Such a decision must have the support of the Prime Minister and six members of the Council.

If Sweden is at war, it is the members of the Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs that decide that the War Delegation shall replace the Riksdag. If possible, the Council shall consult the Prime Minister before announcing its decision. If the Council is unable to meet due to a state of war, the decision is taken by the Government.

The War Delegation and the Government can decide, jointly or separately, that the Riksdag shall resume its powers. This decision shall be taken as soon as conditions allow.

The War Delegation consists of the Speaker and 50 members of the Riksdag. The members are appointed by the Riksdag for each electoral period. The Delegation is chaired by the Speaker. Ministers who are not members of parliament may also be members of the War Delegation.
