The Government has proposed certain legislative amendments to make it easier for British citizens living in Sweden in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal in place. Following a referendum, the UK chose to withdraw from the EU and submitted its withdrawal application on 29 March 2017. Negotiations have been held on a withdrawal agreement but the agreement has not yet been approved by the British Parliament.
The current measures are a further step in the efforts already carried out by the Government and mean, among other things, that the Government may introduce rules enabling British citizens in Sweden to apply for a residence and work permit without having to leave the country. It will also be easier to for individuals to be granted status as long-term residents in Sweden.
The Riksdag supports and says yes to the Government's proposal. The new rules will come into force on 15 July 2019.
