Nordic Council session at the Riksdag

The annual Session of the Nordic Council was held at the Riksdag on 28 October – 31 October. During the week, a large number of debates and meetings were held. You can watch many parts of the programme on demand via the Riksdag webcast service.

Monday 28 October

Question time

The Nordic Council invited representatives from NGOs and civil society to a question-and-answer session where it was possible to put questions to Nordic politicians on the subject of Digitisation and Digital Competence – New Preconditions for Democracy and Democracy and Gender Equality – from the Prospective of Young People. This question-and-answer session was focussed on young people, which was reflected in which organisations were invited.

Tuesday 29 October

Plenary session

Formal opening of the 71st Session of the Nordic Council on Tuesday, followed by a thematic debate with the Nordic Prime Ministers.

Wednesday 30 October

Plenary session

Wednesday's plenary session included the prime ministers’ reports for 2019, international cooperation and new members’ proposals concerning culture and welfare issues.

Thursday 31 October

Plenary session

Thursday’s plenary session included a current affairs debate on the subject of climate change with Professor Michael Tjernström. New members’ proposals were considered and a new President and Vice President were elected for 2020.

Panel discussion/summing up of metoo

At the initiative of the Swedish delegation to the Nordic Council, a panel discussion was arranged to talk about the metoo movements in the culture sectors in the Nordic countries, a follow-up of the Nordic Council debate series “#metoo in the culture sector in the Nordic Council”, which was arranged in February 2019. The panel discussion included discussion of the conclusions of the debate series, and the measures that have been taken both politically and within the culture sector and the effects that they have had.

Much of the session was open to the public and the media. Journalists and photographers wanting to work in the Riksdag during the session needed accreditation, either Riksdag media accreditation or Nordic Council accreditation.
