The maximum size of an accessory dwelling unit built without planning permission will be extended to 30 square metres. The current limit is 25 square metres. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal.
An accessory dwelling unit is a free-standing dwelling belonging to a single- or two-family dwelling, for example an "attefallshus". The amendment means that the living space will be approximately 27 square metres, that it will be easier to make room for basic functions needed in a home, and that the buildings will be easier to adapt to various needs and tastes.
The new rules will come into force on 1 March 2020.
