Better opportunities to investigate the sinking of the MS Estonia

Diving and other underwater activities may be permitted with the purpose of investigating the causes for the sinking of the passenger ferry MS Estonia in the Baltic Sea in September 1994. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal to enable continued investigations in the protected maritime grave area.

The legislative amendment concerns the protection of the peace of the maritime grave around the wreck of MS Estonia. A new exemption will be introduced from the ban on diving and other underwater activities in the wreck and its vicinity. The exemption will apply to activities with the purpose of examining the causes for the sinking. The amendment will come into force on 1 July 2021.

The purpose is to make it possible for the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority to carry out future investigations in order to assess new information published in September 2020 about a hole in the starboard side of the hull.
