A "language duty" is to be introduced, which means that an individual must, if necessary, participate in Swedish for Immigrants (sfi) training in order to be considered available for employment. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposed legislative amendment, the purpose of which is to underline that language training increases opportunities of getting a job.

At the same time, the proposal involves clearer demands on participating in Swedish language training in order to be entitled to income support. There may be social or health reasons which may entitle an individual to income support without being required to participate in language training.

The amendment will come into force on 1 April 2021.
