The Speaker receives Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya

The Speaker Andreas Norlén received Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the opposition in Belarus, for meetings at the Riksdag on 18 November. The Speaker hosted a lunch and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya also met members of the Riksdag from various political parties.

The debate between party leaders on EU policy at the Riksdag on Wednesday has been cancelled

Press On account of the increasing spread of COVID-19 in Sweden, the Speaker and the party group leaders have discussed whether it is appropriate to hold Wednesday's debate between party leaders on EU policy as planned. Following his consultation with the party group leaders, the Speaker has decided to cancel the debate between party leaders on EU policy.

More stringent measures concerning the work of the Riksdag

In October and November 2020, the Public Health Agency of Sweden has, in consultation with the regional communicable disease control consultants, taken decisions to introduce more stringent general recommendations in several Swedish regions, including Stockholm. The Riksdag and the Riksdag Administration have therefore made several of the measures taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic more stringent. Other measures remain unchanged.

Seminar on the 75th anniversary of the UN

On 22 October, the Speaker Andreas Norlén hosted a seminar commemorating the 75th anniversary of the UN. The seminar consisted of a dialogue between the Minister for Foreign Affairs, UN experts, members of the Riksdag and diplomats, and dealt with the challenges connected with the UN’s mission.

Official visit by the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea

On 29 September, Park Byeong-seug, the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea, visited the Riksdag during his official visit to Sweden.

Certain Riksdag activities to be open to the public

Some of the Riksdag's activities that have been closed to the public since the spring are now to become completely or partially available once more. In order to reduce the risk of the spread of the corona virus, the Riksdag will continue to take measures, such as for example limiting opening hours and the number of visitors.

Focus on health and sustainable development at the IPU's fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament

On 19-20 August, the Speaker Andreas Norlén participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which was held virtually.

The ongoing pandemic will continue to affect the work of the Riksdag during the autumn, with just 55 members of the Riksdag present during votes, although all 349 members continue to be in service in exactly the same way as they were during the spring.

Opening of the 2020 Riksdag session

The opening of the Riksdag session, which marks the start of the new parliamentary year, will take place on 8 September. As a result of the corona pandemic, there will be a restricted number of people attending the ceremony in the Chamber of the Riksdag this year.

The Committee on the Constitution resumes its examination of the Government

The Committee on the Constitution has decided today that it will resume its examination of the Government this autumn. A decision concerning hearings will be taken after the opening of the Riksdag session on 8 September.

Extension of party group leaders’ agreement on Riksdag work procedures during the corona crisis

The party group leaders' agreement on the work of the Riksdag during the corona crisis has been further extended until 7 September. The purpose of the agreement is to ensure that the Riksdag can fulfil its tasks even though a large number of members of the Riksdag cannot participate in Riksdag work.

The Committee on the Constitution postpones its examination of the Government

The Committee on the Constitution has agreed to table its examination of the Government until further notice. The Committee will therefore not be holding any hearings as part of its examination during the spring.

Party group leaders change work procedures in the Chamber on account of the coronavirus

The group leaders of the parties represented in the Riksdag have agreed to change work procedures so that just 55 members of the Riksdag will participate in votes in the Chamber.

The Riksdag Library closed until further notice

The Riksdag Library is to close from 3 p.m. on Wednesday 18 March onwards due to the coronavirus.

Guided tours, events and meetings in the Riksdag cancelled until further notice

The Riksdag is currently taking several measures on account of the coronavirus. Until further notice the Riksdag Administration is cancelling guided tours, events, certain meetings, study visits and visits to the Democracy Workshop.

The Speaker visits Estonia

The Speaker Andreas Norlén visited Estonia on 13 and 14 February together with five Swedish members of parliament. The programme during the two-day visit included meetings with representatives of the Estonian Parliament and Government and a visit to the old Swedish communities in Estonia.

Nobel laureates visited the Riksdag

On Wednesday 11 December, three new Nobel laureates visited the former First Chamber of the Riksdag. The seminar was arranged by the Association of MPs and Researchers of the Swedish Parliament (RIFO), and the Speaker Andreas Norlén held the opening address.
