Seminar on the 75th anniversary of the UN

On 22 October, the Speaker Andreas Norlén hosted a seminar commemorating the 75th anniversary of the UN. The seminar consisted of a dialogue between the Minister for Foreign Affairs, UN experts, members of the Riksdag and diplomats, and dealt with the challenges connected with the UN’s mission.

Temporary change in investment rules for Swedish National Pension Funds (AP Funds) as a result of COVID-19

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal for a temporary change in investment rules for four of the Swedish National Swedish Pension Funds, also known as AP Funds, as a result of COVID-19.

Reduced tax for people in rural areas

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal to reduce tax for people living in sparsely populated municipalities mainly in Norrland and the north west of Svealand.

On 29 September, Park Byeong-seug, the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea, visited the Riksdag during his official visit to Sweden.

The Riksbank should be able to finance an international innovation centre

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Riksbank's proposal for legislative amendments enabling the Riksbank, after approval from the Riksdag, to finance the activities of an international organisation. The background is that the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) wishes to establish an innovation centre - a hub - in Sweden in cooperation with the Riksbank and the central banks in Denmark, Iceland and Norway.

The opening of the Riksdag session, marking the start of the 2020/21 parliamentary year, took place today. The event can be watched via the Riksdag webcast service and has been highlighted in the Riksdag's other digital channels. On this page, you will find information about everything that happened during the day.

The Riksdag votes in favour of operational defence cooperation between Sweden and Finland

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal to introduce a new law on operational military support between Sweden and Finland. The purpose is to strengthen the two countries' national defence capacities and their capability to conduct joint military operations.

Sweden takes over the presidency of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference 2020-2021

Four members of the Riksdag participated in the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) on 24 August. The conference, which was held digitally, adopted a resolution directed at the governments of the member states, with a focus on strong cooperation in the light of COVID-19, protection of the marine environment and migration and integration. In connection with the conference, Swedish took over the presidency of the BSPC from Lithuania.

The effects of the pandemic on the opening of the Riksdag session and the work of the Riksdag during the autumn

The current pandemic will affect the form of the opening of the Riksdag session in the Chamber and the other two meetings of the Chamber which are due to take place on the same day. The work of the Riksdag during the autumn will also continue to be affected, though all 349 members will continue to be in service in exactly the same way as they were in the spring.

The Riksdag this summer

The new parliamentary year, the 2020/21 Riksdag session, will begin on 8 September. Members of the Riksdag will continue their parliamentary business in their home communities until the opening of the Riksdag session. For example, they may address written questions to Government ministers. On 20 August, there will be interpellation debates in the Chamber during which Government ministers will answer questions asked by members of the Riksdag. Provision will also be made for interpellation debates on 27 August and 3 September. During the summer, the Riksdag can be convened quickly if necessary to consider urgent matters. As a result of the corona pandemic, all guided tours and visits to the Riksdag and the Democracy Workshop are cancelled until further notice. The Riksdag Library will also remain closed.

Activities in the EU in 2019

The Riksdag has considered the annual government communication on work in the European Union (EU). The communication covers all of the EU's activities during 2019. The Riksdag also called on the Government by way of an announcement to seek, together with other EU member states, to bring about EU legislation imposing sanctions for human rights.

Yes to Swedish participation in military operation in Mali

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal that Sweden contribute with an armed force in a multinational military operation in Mali.

Yes to increased protection for honour-related crime

Penalties are to be tightened for honour-related crime. Crimes for which the motive has been to preserve or re-establish honour are to be seen as an aggravating circumstance when assessing culpability. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

The Government should review rules regarding transfer of custody and adoption of children in foster homes

The Riksdag is calling upon the Government, by way of an announcement, to take the initiative to review the rules regarding transfer of custody and adoption of children in foster homes. The Riksdag is also directing an announcement to the Government urging that it get back to the Riksdag with a proposal for more stringent legislation against foreign polygamous marriages.

Exceptions from the requirement to have a building permit in the case of the spread of a disease constituting a danger to society

The Government will be able to allow exceptions to the requirements of the Planning and Building Act (PBL) in cases where there is a risk of the spread of a disease constituting a danger to society, such as COVID-19. The purpose of the exception is for example to get field hospitals and testing tents in place if regular hospital premises are not sufficient. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

Secret data interception to be permitted for serious offences

Technological developments have made it more difficult to obtain the necessary information to enable crimes to be investigated. For example, information is often encrypted and it is therefore not possible to access it with the methods that are available today. The Government therefore proposes that secrete data interception shall be permitted in cases where there are suspicions of serious crime. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

Revised central government budget for 2020

The Riksdag has approved revisions in the central government budget, according to which the municipalities and regions will receive an additional SEK 2.5 billion.

Foreign policy debate

The foreign policy debate was held in the Riksdag on Wednesday 12 February. The Minister for Foreign Affairs Ann Linde (Social Democratic Party) introduced the debate with a presentation of the Government's Statement of Foreign Policy.

New tax on plastic carrier bags

In order to reduce the amount of packaging and packaging waste, a new tax will be introduced on carrier bags made of plastic.

Nobel laureates visited the Riksdag

On Wednesday 11 December, three new Nobel laureates visited the former First Chamber of the Riksdag. The seminar was arranged by the Association of MPs and Researchers of the Swedish Parliament (RIFO), and the Speaker Andreas Norlén held the opening address.
