The Speaker receives the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament

On 9 September, the Speaker Andreas Norlén received the Speaker of the Eduskunta – the Finnish Parliament, Matti Vanhanen, during his official visit to Sweden.

Foreign policy debate

The foreign policy debate was held in the Riksdag on Wednesday 13 February at 9 a.m. The Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström (Social Democratic Party) introduced the debate with a presentation of the Government's Statement of Foreign Policy. The parties represented in the Riksdag then debated their view of foreign policy. The foreign policy debate takes place once a year and is divided into two parts. In the first part, one representative from each party participates. In the second half of the debate, the members who would like to speak are given the opportunity to take the floor. The first part of the debate was interpreted into English and can be viewed via the Riksdag webcast service.

This year’s first debate between party leaders

The first party leader debate of the year took place on Wednesday 30 January at 9 a.m. During the debate, representatives from the parties in the Riksdag had the opportunity to argue in favour of the policies they wish to pursue. The debate was interpreted into sign language and English. It can be viewed on demand via the Riksdag webcast service.

Seminar with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

The Speaker welcomes Nobel Laureates in Chemistry and Medicine to a seminar at the Riksdag

On Tuesday 11 December, the Speaker Andreas Norlén held an opening speech to welcome Frances Arnold, this year's Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Tasuku Honjo, this year's Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, to a seminar at the Riksdag.

IPU meeting with a focus on reduced inequalities

The Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU's) 136th Assembly took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 1–5 April. The Speaker Urban Ahlin led a Riksdag delegation to the meeting which gathered parliamentarians and Speakers from 126 countries.
