The Riksdag during September

There will be interpellation debates in the Chamber on 7 September during which Government ministers will answer questions asked by members of the Riksdag. The new parliamentary session, 2017/18, will begin on 12 September. Until the opening of the parliamentary session, the members of the Riksdag will continue their parliamentary business in their home communities. During this time, they have the opportunity to address written questions to Government ministers.

First Deputy Speaker receives Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs

The First Deputy Speaker Tobias Billström received the Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on 17 August for a meeting at the Riksdag. The agenda included issues in connection to the Qatar crisis, the situation for guest workers in Qatar and exchange between Qatar and Sweden.

First Deputy Speaker receives the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

The First Deputy Speaker Tobias Billström received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Nikola Dimitrov on 16 August for a meeting at the Riksdag. Discussions included political developments in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and and their way to EU membership.

Yes to Swedish participation in the EU naval operation Atalanta

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal on Swedish participation in the EU naval operation Atalanta. The operation focuses on security in the waters off Somalia's coast.

It is going to be easier to remove unlawful settlements

It is going to be easier for landowners to reclaim their land when people have settled there without permission. As a result of the Riksdag's decision, a new form of assistance - removal - will be introduced.

Greater opportunities for collective action against workplaces with foreign labour

Swedish trade unions are to be given the right to take collective action against workplaces with foreign labour which have not entered into a Swedish collective agreement. This will provide better working conditions for employees who come to Sweden to work here for a limited time. The Riksdag voted yes to the Government's proposal.

The Speaker participated in a memorial ceremony

In honour of the victims of Friday's attack in Stockholm, a memorial ceremony was held on Monday at Stockholm City Hall. The Speaker Urban Ahlin participated in the ceremony, which opened with a minute of silence. First Deputy Speaker Tobias Billström also attended the ceremony.

The Riksdag flies the flag at half-mast

The Riksdag is flying its flags at half-mast in connection with what took place in Stockholm on Friday. On 8 April, the Riksdag's flags are to be displayed at half-mast from 8 o'clock in the morning.

"All indications are that our capital has, once again, been afflicted by a terrorist attack. It is with rage that I condemn this deed, and with great sorrow that my thoughts go to the victims of the attack and their families," says the Speaker Urban Ahlin.

Open Day at the Riksdag

The Riksdag Open Day took place on Saturday 25 March. During the day, it was possible to visit the Chamber, meet members of the Riksdag, parliamentary committees and political parties. The programme included a question-and-answer session with MPs and guided tours.

Foreign policy debate

A foreign policy debate was held on Wednesday 15 February. The first part of the debate was introduced with the presentation of the Statement of Government Policy on Foreign Affairs by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström (Social Democratic Party). One representative from each party then participated in the initial debate. In the second part of the debate, all members who wished to speak were given the floor. The first part of the debate was interpreted into English and can be viewed via the Riksdag webcast service.

Ban on wearing masks at sports events

The wearing of masks at sports events is to be prohibited. Anyone visiting a sports facility, for example for a football match, who either completely or partially covers their face in a way that makes it more difficult to be identified can be sentenced to a fine or imprisonment for at most six months.

Debate between party leaders

A debate between party leaders was held on Wednesday 11 January. During the debate, the leaders of all the parties represented in the Riksdag had the opportunity to argue in favour of the policies they wish to pursue. Continued Swedish participation in the military training mission in Iraq

Sweden will continue to participate in the ongoing military training mission in northern Iraq in 2017. This is what has been decided by the Riksdag.

Seminar with the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

On 12 December the Riksdag arranged a seminar with President Juan Manuel Santos, winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. The theme of the seminar was the peace process in Colombia and the lessons learned from it. The Nobel Laureate's speech was followed by a panel discussion. The seminar was held in English and can be watched via the Riksdag webcast service.

Freedom of the Press Act celebrates its 250th anniversary

On 2 December, the Swedish Parliament commemorated the 250th anniversary of the Freedom of the Press Act with a special anniversary book and a seminar on freedom of the press and public access to information in Sweden and Finland. The participants in the seminar included the Chair and Deputy Chair of the Committee on the Constitution, the Minister for Justice Morgan Johansson (Social Democratic Party) and the former president of Finland Tarja Halonen. A number of contributors to the anniversary book also participated in the seminar, including the novelist, journalist and literary critic Agneta Pleijel.

Meeting of Speakers at the Nordic Council Session

The Second Deputy Speaker Björn Söder participated in the meeting of Speakers of the Nordic Parliaments which took place in connection with the Nordic Council Session in Copenhagen on 1–3 November. The Nordic Speakers took the opportunity to exchange information and discuss current issues of common interest. The Speakers also had the opportunity to discuss border prevention following a presentation of the Freedom of Movement Council.
