  • King and Queen of Denmark visit the Riksdag

    The Speaker Andreas Norlén received the King of Denmark Frederik X and Queen Mary in connection with their state visit to Sweden on 6 May. During their visit to the Riksdag, the royal couple also met the party group leaders of the Riksdag.

  • Members of the Riksdag observe elections in North Macedonia

    Parliamentary elections will be held in North Macedonia on 8 May. Eight members of the Riksdag are participating in an international delegation which will observe the elections. A Swedish member is the head of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) delegation.

  • Yes to an extended travel ban for children

    The Committee on Health and Welfare has proposed that the Riksdag vote in favour of a more comprehensive travel ban for children and young people.

  • Electronic communication services and visits to be reduced and monitored at special youth homes

    Safety and security at special youth homes are to be increased. The Committee on Health and Welfare proposes that the Riksdag vote in favour of the Government's proposal to introduce measures.

  • Stronger consumer protection in the area of gambling

    New rules are to strengthen consumer protection in connection with gambling. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal which seeks to limit problems caused by gambling, such as debt and addiction.

  • Finnish President to visit the Riksdag

    On 23 April, the Speaker Andreas Norlén will receive the Finnish President Alexander Stubb in connection with the President's state visit to Sweden. In addition to the Speaker, the President will meet party group leaders of the Riksdag.

  • It will be easier to change gender

    The Riksdag has voted in favour of the proposal of the Committee on Health and Welfare for a new act on certain genital surgery, a new act on establishment of gender in certain cases, and a proposal for an act repealing the current Act on Establishing Gender Identity in Certain Cases.

  • Visit the Riksdag on Stockholm Culture Night

    The Riksdag will participate in Stockholm Culture Night on Saturday 20 April between 18.00 and 24.00. Take the opportunity to experience the parliament buildings from the inside.

  • Police are to be given powers to search for weapons in security zones

    The Riksdag has voted in favour of amendments to the Police Act. According to the amendments, the police will be given extended powers to carry out body searches and to search transport for weapons or other dangerous objects within a certain area.

  • Additional amending budget for 2024 – military equipment and financial support to Ukraine

    The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal to provide military equipment and financial support to Ukraine.

  • NATO flag raised at Riksplan

    On the morning of Monday 18 March, a flag-raising ceremony was held at Riksplan in front of the Riksdag to mark Sweden’s NATO accession. During the ceremony, speeches were delivered by H.M. The King, the Speaker Andreas Norlén and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The NATO flag was raised and the Swedish Royal Army Band performed.

  • Finnish Speaker to visit the Riksdag

    The Speaker of the Parliament of Finland, Jussi Halla-aho made an official visit to Sweden on 13–14 March. Included in the Speaker’s delegation were a number of members of the Finnish Parliament.

  • Press invitation: Ceremony in connection with Sweden's accession to NATO

    In connection with Sweden’s accession to the defence alliance NATO, the Riksdag and the Government will hold a ceremony at Riksplan on Monday 18 March 2024.

  • Visit to the UK by the Speaker, Deputy Speakers and party group leaders

    On 28 February–1 March, the Speaker Andreas Norlén made an official visit to London, UK. The delegation included the Second and Third Deputy Speakers, party group leaders and the Secretary-General of the Riksdag.

  • Rights for children and adults in sheltered housing to be strengthened

    The Riksdag has voted in favour of new regulations to improve protection of and support to people who need sheltered housing and to strengthen the children's rights perspective for children accompanied by a guardian who are admitted to sheltered housing.

  • Possible temporary ban on transport of passengers without ID documents

    It will be possible for the Government to introduce rules allowing a temporary ban on the transport of passengers without valid ID documents to Sweden from other countries. It will also be possible for the Government to introduce sanction charges for transport companies who violate the ban. The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

  • Official visit by the Speaker to Japan

    On 5–9 February, the Speaker Andreas Norlén visited Japan together with four members of the Riksdag. The programme included meetings with representatives of the Japanese Parliament.

  • Certain changes to the regulatory framework on security cases under the Aliens Act

    It will be possible to revoke aliens’ passports – which can in certain cases be issued to individuals without a passport and with no opportunity to obtain one – for reasons for security. The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal.

  • The French President visited the Riksdag

    On 30 January, the Speaker Andreas Norlén received the French President Emmanuel Macron in connection with the President’s state visit to Sweden. The President’s delegation included members of the French Parliament.

  • Azerbaijani participation in the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly In focus at the winter session

    The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) held its winter session on 22–26 January. Eight MPs from the Swedish delegation participated. At the session, an urgent debate was held on the situation for children in Ukraine.

Elections to the European Parliament 2024

Elections to the European Parliament will take place at the beginning of June. In Sweden, the elections will take place on 9 June. Citizens in Sweden will elect the people who will represent them during the coming five years.

The Instrument of Government – 50 years

All public power in Sweden proceeds from the people and the Riksdag is the foremost representative of the people. This is stated in the Instrument of Government – the fundamental law setting out the basic principles of our democracy. The current Instrument of Government was adopted by the Riksdag on 6 March 1974.
