Opening of the 2016 Riksdag session

The 2016/17 Riksdag session opened at 2 p.m. on Tuesday 13 September. At the request of the Speaker Urban Ahlin, King Carl XVI Gustaf declared the 2016/17 Riksdag session open. The regional theme for the opening this year was northern Norrland.

First Deputy Speaker at Nordic-Baltic Conference of Speakers

On 20-22 August, the First Deputy Speaker Tobias Billström (Moderate Party) visited Estonia and Latvia to participate in the Nordic-Baltic Conference of Speakers and in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of independence in the Baltic countries.

The Riksdag during the summer

There will be interpellation debates in the Chamber on 25 August and 1 and 8 September during which Government ministers will answer questions asked by members of the Riksdag. The new parliamentary session, 2016/17, will begin on 13 September. Until the opening of the parliamentary session, the members of the Riksdag will continue their parliamentary business in their home communities. During this time, they have the opportunity to address written questions to Government ministers. Guided tours of the Riksdag will be given in English on weekdays at 12 noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. during the summer.

South Korea's Deputy Speaker visited the Riksdag

On 2 August, Third Deputy Speaker Esabelle Dingizian (Green Party) received a visit by Deputy Speaker of the South Korean National Assembly Shim Jae-Cheol with delegation at the Riksdag.

Member of the Riksdag Kent Härstedt leads election monitoring mission in Belarus

Member of the Riksdag Kent Härstedt (Social Democratic Party) has been appointed Special Coordinator for the OSCE's election monitoring of the parliamentary elections in Belarus on 11 September. The appointment has been made by Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

It may become more difficult to obtain a residence permit in Sweden

Sweden is to introduce temporary residence permits during a limited period. The right to family member immigration is to be restricted and maintenance requirements are to be tightened up. The Riksdag has voted in favour of the proposal from the Government. At the same time, the Riksdag directed an announcement to the Government concerning the selection of quota refugees.

The Speaker's statement on the murder of the British member of parliament Jo Cox

After the murder of the British member of parliament Jo Cox, the Speaker Urban Ahlin stated that this was also an attack on democracy: "The attack on the member of parliament Jo Cox is very sad news. It is also an attack on democracy and all those who work in the service of democracy. My thoughts and deepest sympathies are of course with the family and colleagues of Jo Cox", said Urban Ahlin.

Party leaders met in a debate

A debate between party leaders was held in the Riksdag on 15 June. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party) delivered the first speech. During the debate between party leaders, the leaders of all the parties represented in the Riksdag have the opportunity to argue in favour of the policies they wish to pursue. The debate can be viewed on-demand via the Riksdag webcast service. The debate was interpreted into English.

All-party committee of inquiry on the Riksdag’s work with EU matters

On 8 June, the Riksdag Board decided that an all-party committee of inquiry will examine the Riksdag’s work with EU matters. The inquiry will be led by First Deputy Speaker Tobias Billström (Moderate Party).

Christening gift for Prince Oscar from the Swedish Parliament and Government

Prince Oscar was Christened on 27 May. The Speaker Urban Ahlin and the Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party) attended the Christening. Prince Oscar's Christening gift from the Swedish Parliament and the Swedish Government was a collection of Swedish children's books.

Yes to memorandum of understanding with NATO on host nation support (UFöU4)

Sweden can inter into a memorandum of understanding with NATO. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal. The agreement should make it easier to make practical preparations, also known as host nation support, to enable foreign units to operate inside Swedish borders.

Finnish Speaker visits the Riksdag

The Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, Maria Lohela, was the guest of the Riksdag and the Speaker Urban Ahlin during her official visit to Sweden on 26 May.

Sweden will be able to help France with military equipment

After the terrorist attacks in France on 13 November 2015, France requested the support of other EU countries in the fight against the terrorist organisation Daish. Under Article 42 (7) of the Treaty on European Union, France has, among other things, requested support with certain ammunition.

Towards a gender-equal Riksdag – but challenges remain

While female and male members of the Riksdag believe that they have equal opportunities when it comes to exercising an influence and having political impact, female members experience greater demands and a higher degree of anxiety. This is reflected in the survey that was distributed to all the Riksdag members.

Riksdag votes in favour of Swedish participation in Mali

The Riksdag has voted in favour of a proposal from the Government to extend Swedish participation in the UN mission in Mali. At the same time, the Riksdag submitted two recommendations, known as announcements, to the Government.

Chile's President visited the Riksdag

On 11 May, the President of Chile Michelle Bachelet visited the Riksdag as part of her state visit to Sweden. During a ceremony in the Riksdag, the President unveiled a bust of Harald Edelstam. The President then delivered a speech and answered questions from members of the Riksdag.

Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs visits the Riksdag

The Speaker Urban Ahlin received the Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mghebrishvili when he visited the Riksdag on Tuesday. During their meeting, they discussed reform efforts in Georgia and the situation in their immediate neighbourhood. The Minister also had a meeting with the presiding officers of the Committee on Justice.

Third Deputy Speaker at Women in Parliament Global Forum Summit Jordan

On 2-5 May, the Third Deputy Speaker Esabelle Dingizian (Green Party) visited Amman, Jordan. During her visit, Esabelle Dingizian participated in the Women in Parliament Global Forum Summit and also took part in various meetings outside the conference.
