Non-EU/EEA citizens to be granted permits for seasonal work

Citizens of countries that are not members of the EU or EEA who have been offered employment as seasonal workers in Sweden are to be granted permits for seasonal work. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

Finland’s Speaker visits the Riksdag

The Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, Paula Risikko, visited Sweden on April 19 at the invitation of Speaker Urban Ahlin. 

Speaker visits Faroe Islands with delegation

On 12-13 April, the Speaker Urban Ahlin led a delegation of Riksdag members on an official visit to the Faroe Islands. A meeting with Faroese Speaker Páll á Reynatúgvu was one of various events on the agenda.

New law to be introduced when the General Data Protection Regulation begins to apply

The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will apply from 25 May onwards. It is a binding EU law which will regulate how personal data may be processed within the EU. In connection with this, the Data Protection Act will cease to apply and a new act will be introduced instead to harmonise with the GDPR.

New way of serving writs for faster processing of criminal cases

The Riksdag voted in favour of allowing a new way of serving writs, known as accessible service, to be used on a trial basis in criminal cases.

More sectors of industry will need to introduce staff registers

More companies are to be affected by the requirement to keep staff registers at their place of work. This will apply to the vehicle service industry, the food and tobacco wholesale business and the beauty and toiletry industry.

The President of the National Assembly of Serbia Maja Gojović visited the Riksdag on 20–22 March at the invitation of the Speaker Urban Ahlin.

Swedish embassies and consulates to provide protection to EU citizens

Citizens of EU member states and members of their families are to be entitled to the same help from Swedish embassies and consulates as Swedish citizens in countries outside the EU.

Compensation to certain people with changed gender identity

People who applied to change their gender identity during the period when it was required that they should not have the ability to reproduce are to receive compensation from the state under certain conditions.

Official visit by the Speaker to Kuwait

Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim received the Speaker of the Riksdag Urban Ahlin along with a delegation of Riksdag members during their visit to Kuwait between 17 and 19 March.

Sweden to be given a new national park

The Riksdag has approved the Government's proposal that land and water areas owned by the state in the municipalities of Alvesta and Tingsryd are to be made into Åsnen National Park.

EU proposal on labour law regulations goes too far

The European Commission wishes to introduce new minimum regulations in the area of labour law. However, the Riksdag does not consider that the proposal in all of its parts is such that should be decided at EU level.

Open conference on information exchange in EU matters

An IPEX conference is to be held in the former First Chamber of the Riksdag on 2 March. The Speaker Urban Ahlin will open the conference which will also be attended by members from the Parliament of Luxembourg and the European Parliament. IPEX is a web platform that aims to promote greater exchange of information between parliaments on EU matters.

Greater requirements in connection with the export of military equipment

Greater requirements are to be introduced concerning countries to which Sweden exports military equipment. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

The Riksdag's work on EU matters works well overall. However, the All-party EU Committee has a small number of proposals regarding amendments to the Riksdag Act to enable the text of the Act to better reflect how work on EU matters is actually conducted.

New regulations for positions of special responsibility and pensions regarding unemployment insurance

New regulations are to be introduced for unemployment insurance. These will include clearer rules regarding unemployment insurance for people holding positions of special responsibility outside of regular employment. The regulations for unemployment insurance and pensions are also to be coordinated.

Foreign policy debate

The foreign policy debate will be held in the Riksdag on Wednesday 14 February at 9 a.m. The Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström (Social Democratic Party) will introduce the debate with a presentation of the Government's Statement of Foreign Policy. The parties represented in the Riksdag then debate their view of foreign policy. The debate is divided into two parts. In the first part, one representative from each party participates. In the second half of the debate, the members who would like to speak are given the opportunity to take the floor. The first part of the debate will be interpreted into English and can be viewed via the Riksdag webcast service .
